Monarch Beach – Labor Day on the Links

Just winding up a relaxing labor day weekend down in the OC.  On Saturday, we played a really interesting, tough (RTJ Jr.) very pretty resort course called Monarch Beach.  There were some really cool holes on the course – I especially loved the three hole stretch of 5, 6, 7.

The highlight of the day for me was rolling in a 60 foot birdie putt on #5 – and then loudly celebrating…only to turn around and notice that a wedding was happening on the bluff overlooking the fifth green.  The groomsmen seemed pretty psyched for me – the bridesmaids, bride, mom, priest…not so much.

The course looks a little brown..because it was.  They killed all of the fairways to re-seed them.  Didn’t effect play, but looked pretty weird.  On film, it almost looks like we’re in great britian.

This view greeted us this morning. Not too shabby.

A Walk in Assisi

Just getting around to posting pictures from the earlier part of my Italy trip.  One of the highlights of the trip was an afternoon spent in the ancient city of Assisi.  I’d known of Assisi only as the birthplace of St. Francis.  The cathedral to the town’s most notable saint was a structure of understated beauty.  For me, though, the most memorable part of Assisi was the quiet found in the meandering warren of side streets and alleys.  You can just feel the history.  Here are a few of my many photos from the walk.

Roma

Molto vespas in Rome, just as I remembered

Spent a great day in Rome with a fine group of traveling Automatticians.  My last visit to Rome was almost exactly 10 years ago – when I took up residence in Trastevere after finishing up the Mass. bar exam.  The great thing about the eternal city is that not much changes in 10 years.  Lots of great memories came back – especially when we got some gelato in my old neighborhood and strolled over to Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere…happy to report that it’s still the same lively scene it was in 2002.  Here are some photos from the day (via hipstamatic).

A watch shop (I think..)
